The department of Arequipa has many types of terrain. It begins in the coastal desert and then climbs the Andes, reaching high into the snowy peaks and volcanoes. It also has large portions and beautiful beaches like Mollendo and Camana.

Arequipa, known as the White City for its beautiful white walls of ashlar volcanic stone of the place, situated at the foot of the volcanoes Misti and Chachani and snow of Mount Pichu Pichu. The center of the city, located in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO, shows features baroque churches and colonial mansions, like the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a Spanish city in miniature stone streets, beautiful patios and plazas. Sabandía Tiabaya and Tingo, located among the countryside are must see places, and the irresistible Arequipa cuisine is the perfect complement to the visit.

Only 3 hours and 45 minutes from the capital are the valley and the Colca Canyon, one of the most extraordinary country. Throughout the region, you can see colorful pre-Inca terraces cultivated to date with quinoa, corn, barley and wheat. During pre-Hispanic times, the department was inhabited by Collaguas and Cabanas, today, people keep their Colonial churches in Yanque, Lari, and Madrigal, and still wear their traditional clothes.

Also, you can practice many kinds of adventure sports in the valley such as mountain biking, trekking and rafting. And the Cruz del Condor can appreciate the majestic flight of the condors. Other attractions in the department are the Toro Muerto petroglyphs, Valley of the Volcanoes Andagua and Cotahuasi Canyon.

Cotahuasi Valley and Canyon

Landscape Reserve Cotahuasi Sub Basin is located 375 km (233 miles) northwest of Arequipa, about 9 hours away by car and 12 hours by public bus.
Different altitudinal levels have created the conditions for a great biological diversity with plenty of flora and fauna. Cotahuasi Canyon includes twelve life zones and three ecological zones and is the deepest in Peru to 3535 m.

Andagua, Valley of the Volcanoes
|
Andagua is located 323 km northeast of the city of Arequipa, about 9 hours by car. The Valley of the Volcanoes was the center of thundering heart seizures in the Andean volcanic ridge 200,000 years ago. Even today you can see an extensive layer of lava which have sprung up around 86 small dormant volcanoes about 30 feet high.
